is there anybody out there who used to go to the Central in the early 70's? get in touch please.. hopefully Steve will soon be putting some old pictures etc on this site. one of the things we dont have at the moment is many pictures of the old Central.. Now I for one was never very happy about having my picture taken in the old days, but I'm sure there are loads of pics out there, as everybody seemed to carry a camera at the time. I know that any stories & scans of memorabilia would be good too.

Anyway thanks for joining the forum - it's having a slow but steady momentum! If you could paste the link for the youtube video that would be great. Steve

OK Rocket, what was your real name, as I remrember Jeff and Phil well and I used to work at the Central all nighters apart from running Hernies with Dennis and doing the east coast runs every bank holiday.

Hi alan
Just got back from my holiday so haven't been on for a few weeks. The only Alan with a TV broadside I can remember was Alan Stevenson, is that you? As fas as Rob is concerned, I last saw him in December when he was over visiting an elderly realtive. Kenny and Bev Coleman anhd a friend of theirs took Rob over ti the Longfield Suite at Prestwich as it was all that was on nthat weekend. I think he managed one dance before his knee went! If you aren't Stevo, give me some mo9re clues to help me remember, my memory isn't what it used to be.
Regards
Mike

YO MICK,
Your memory is spot on, funny enough last time I saw Kenny was at ROB'S 40th...Sorry to hear his knees are tweaked, I've been lucky. still in great shape..Still dance like a pregnant dog.. Still hang out in skeachy clubs, Open at 12 no beer, just like the old day just not as often.. Different grooves, but the same..You know how it is Mick ..I tell my girlfriend how the soul scene really was, as it seems the modern media give a really bland and sanitized version..Anyway, keep in touch Mick.. ROCKET
PS I picked the nickname up at the Torch.Do you see anything of Peter Pell??? Keep Dacin if you can!!! Rocket

Yo Mick,
The words Pregnant dog are the computers. On my last post I fear this site has sanitized my own writing...Welcome to the modern world.. All The best, Rocket

Hi Folks, came across this site by accident, just looking around the soul sites as usual, after attending the last night at the Irish Centre (which I enjoyed by the way Steve)
I used to go to the Central in the early days, around 1968-69 onwards, and at this time it was open Friday, Sunday and I think Tuesday nights, and as well as hearing current Motown sounds and Club soul from Atlantic and Stax etc there was also quite a bit of Ska played as well.
If I remember rightly it used to be a rockers club, and on a few occassions scooters outside got kicked over by angry greasers, and I also remember the bouncer, Big Willie, sorting a few greasers out as well. Big Willie was a large black guy who I think at one time was, or became, Mr UK body building champion, so he was not somebody to mess with!
I stopped going after a couple of years, then a colleague at work, Roy Adams, told me about the rare soul that that was being played, and coaches that were going from there to the Torch in Tunstall, and I started going again.
You probably won't know me by name, or recognise me if you saw me in a club, but names I remember were Little Steve (Louigi), John Burrell, Pete Dillon, Chris Mallows, Tony Jackson, Keith, Swish, Dave Thompson.
I remember Saturday afternoons getting my hair cut by Derek Barnett at Character Hairdressing on the balcony in Grand Arcade? and then squeezing into the small unit Jumbo Records had on the balcony and looking at his latest imports. Good old days. After a while a couple of friends and I started a mobile disco, and we got a regular night on a Monday at the Peel in the cellar bar, playing northern stuff. That did okay for a while then died off.
I also remember a regular weekday night that Snake Davis used to play at the Central Station Hotel on Commercial Street, that must have been early 80's.
Anyway, enough of my rambling, I really would like this link to succeed with more people adding information and trivia, and maybe stuff about the Spinning Disc as well.
I've got some scans of memorabillia that I would like to send but I don't know how to add them to this post! Please let me know how and I will send them over.
All the best
Graham
